Meet Two ECOPs

One of the most valuable benefits about joining MTS as an ECOP member is the networking. Meet two ECOPs here that are beginning their careers in ocean science. Learn more about ECOPs membership and join here!

Brad Becker, Subsea 7 (pictured above)

Q: How long have you been in the field of ocean science? What is your background and degree?

A: I have been in the field of ocean sciences for a little over 2 years. I majored in Ocean Engineering at Texas A&M University - College Station with a background in subsea and moored systems. I worked as a student technician for 2 years in college at a scale model wave basin on campus with the mission to provide technology, expertise, and services needed for the development of drilling, production, and transportation systems that enable the safe and economically viable exploitation of hydrocarbon resources in deep and ultra-deep water.

Q: When did you join MTS? What events or programs have you attended as an MTS member? What value do you find in MTS and in the ECOP category? How has MTS assisted you in your career?

A: I joined MTS my sophomore year of college when I selected Ocean Engineering as my major. While in college I attended almost every meeting we had for our student chapter, as well as the yearly MTS/SNAME joint meeting, and the occasional OTC and event in Houston when school allowed. If it were not for my current company (Subsea 7) presenting and hiring at one of our meetings, I most likely wouldn’t be in the situation I am currently in. I find great value in MTS and ECOP as it allows for young professionals to network with each other and meet more like- minded individuals in the field that you might not normally meet in your regular day to day activities. It has has great benefit at the university level expanding students knowledges of players in the field.

Q: What type of programs/events do you hope to attend as an MTS ECOP member in the future?

A: I am most looking forward to networking events and opportunities as well as the occasional lunch and learn about more stuff going on in our field.

Ramona Barber, Ocean Engineer at Glosten

Q: How long have you been in the field of ocean science? What is your background and degree?

A: I studied fluid-structure interaction for my doctoral work in structural engineering at the University of Washington. Following the receipt of my degree in 2017, I spend several years continuing my research on flexible composite foils for marine applications at the University of Washington and l’Ecole Centrale de Nantes in France before starting at Glosten, where I’ve worked for a year now.

Q: When did you join MTS? What events or programs have you attended as an MTS member?

A:  I joined MTS towards the end of my time as a student and was able to enjoy a Technology Summit and a seriously cool tour of the Icebreaker USCG Healy before I moved to France. Recently returned, I am excited to discover the future opportunities that await.

Q: What type of programs/events do you hope to attend as an MTS ECOP member in the future?

A: Section meetings, ECOP social events, tours and other learning opportunities.
