Matthew Gardner embarked on his journey in ocean technology back in 2000 when he enrolled in a course on Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) technology. A few years later, he became an active participant in the MATE ROV Competition. In 2005, Matthew assumed the role of Competition Technical Manager for the MATE ROV Competition. In this capacity, he plays a pivotal role in crafting the competition's missions each year, collaborating with scientists and industry professionals to transform real-world ROV tasks into diverse scenarios that cater to teams of varying skill levels.

Since the 2017 ROV season, Matthew has taken on the additional responsibility of serving as the regional coordinator for the MATE Monterey Bay Regional ROV Competition. Moreover, he holds the position of lead instructor for SeaMATE ROV kits. In this role, he is responsible for developing numerous presentations, lessons, and instructional materials used in the SeaMATE summer professional development workshops. Matthew is also the author of the building instructions and lesson presentations for all SeaMATE ROV kits and their kit sub-systems.

Matthew Gardner is an alumnus of the University of Puget Sound, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology.
