Innovation, Community, and Global Impact: Reflections from MTS Leadership on Recent International Engagements
By: Hans VanSumeren
Earlier this month, I had the privilege of representing MTS at two remarkable gatherings: Ocean Business in Southampton, UK and the International Conference on AI for the Oceans hosted by the MTS India Section. Although distinct in their structure and scale, each event underscored the core elements that define our global MTS community's vibrancy and importance: our dedication to innovation and strong bonds. I saw firsthand how our members advanced their fields and supported each other, from informal chats with longtime collaborators to challenging technical sessions.
Global industry leaders gathered at the National Oceanography Centre for Ocean Business, creating a palpable buzz of energy. More than 10,000 people from over 80 countries attended this year's show, breaking previous attendance records. Attending this event for the first time, I was particularly impressed by the continuous dockside demonstrations of cutting-edge industry technology. Beyond the exhibits and demonstrations, what struck me most was the collaborative spirit on display. A buzz of conversations on the packed showfloor led to new partnerships, reinforced existing relationships, and broadened networks. This event underscored the significance of experiential learning and direct interaction to further our collective mission.
Unlike the large-scale Ocean Business event, the AI for the Oceans Conference at SRM Institute of Science and Technology provided a smaller, more specialized experience, but was still equally impactful. The sessions highlighted AI's importance toward new developments in oceanography, engineering, and systems design. Presenters explored everything from digital twins, to data-based modeling for improved ocean wave prediction, to new opportunities for autonomous systems integration with expanded AI capabilities. I'm incredibly impressed by the students' professional presence and engagement at the conference. Meeting so many passionate and energetic people who'll flourish in diverse ocean economy sectors was a true honor.
I also visited SRI Sairam Engineering College and the 5th International Conference on Computing and Communications Technologies (ICCCT) 2025 conference, meeting many inspiring people—from students, to faculty, to college leadership. At SRI Sairam, the prominent display of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals on walls, notebooks, and name tags was striking. Students at SRI Sairam have the encouragement, support, and opportunity to positively impact the world. The combination of innovative thinking and entrepreneurial opportunities for students offers hope for a sustainable and prosperous global ocean in the future.
These events served as a strong reminder: breakthroughs are fueled by people, and mutual inspiration and support are as crucial as technological advancements.
Reflecting on these experiences, I see how innovation and community work together in our global network. No matter the setting—a bustling show floor or an intimate breakout session—our members are bound by creativity and collaboration. Industry convenings reaffirm the strength of the MTS community–not just in its technical expertise, but in the relationships and shared purpose that fuel it.
As the weather warms up this summer, I hope you'll participate in our many events: OTC Houston, Oceans in Action, OCEANS Brest or Great Lakes, Section/Committee meetings, and more. Consider MTS your professional home; nothing replaces in-person connections with colleagues and industry experts.
Thank you for being a part of this growing and dynamic community.
