New Jersey Hosts Their First Annual Marine Technology Society Student Section Research Symposium
The first annual Marine Technology Society New Jersey Student Section Research Symposium recently took place on Friday, April 14th at the Rutgers University Marine Field Station and Jacques Cousteau National Estuarine Research Reserve in Tuckerton, NJ. This symposium brought together over 25 undergraduate and graduate students as well as faculty and staff from Rutgers University, Stockton University, Princeton University, and the New Jersey Institute of technology for a day of networking and student presentations.

Liesl Hotaling of Eidos Education and the MTS Vice President of Communications and Publications kicked off the event with a keynote detailing her journey in the marine technology field and some of the many options available to students for their own journeys in marine science and technology. Following the keynote, there were two sessions with a total of six 10-minute student research talks on a wide-range of topics utilizing marine technologies.
A major highlight from conversations included repurposing high-frequency radars as ecological sensors to a biologically inspired fin for underwater robotics using Mola mola (ocean sunfish) swimming mechanics.
The remainder of the event consisted of lunch and a tour of the Rutgers University Marine Field Station and an afternoon poster session. The New Jersey Student Section is grateful to MTS for funding and running this event and hopes to continue to build the community!
