Welcome New Members

MTS welcomes four new organizational members in March

Join us in welcoming four new organizational members to the Marine Technology Society! Jumping on board is Nortek USA, 4D Nav, Rockland Scientific, and SUNFISH Inc.

About Nortek USA
Nortek designs, develops, and manufactures acoustic underwater sensors that are used to measure motion in the marine environment. Nortek’s ocean technology is used in many applications, from understanding the impact of climate change to providing navigational assistance to underwater vehicles.

Last month, Nortek’s Renato Arruk recently helped maritime consultancy firm Canopus Marine Group strengthen their expertise by providing hands-on training for vessel-mounted current profilers (ADCPs) at a port in Lima, Peru. The training will help staff at Canopus maximize the operational potential of Nortek’s vessel-mounted system, while meeting the needs of Peru’s expanding maritime market.

Welcome to the MTS community Nortek!

About 4D NAV
4D Nav has been providing groundbreaking offshore solutions for over a decade. Founded in 2008 by a team of industry professionals with the common goal of introducing the marine industry to a new generation of real-time spatial software that utilizes the latest software development tools.

The team at 4D Nav tasked itself with developing an advanced software solution for marine project management professionals to provide a comprehensive overview of infrastructure and total control over all operational management, both onshore and offshore, while reducing operating costs and carbon footprint. The result – a turn-key project management solution. Based on 4D Nav’s industry leading NavView, Command & Control enables marine project management professionals to control and manage projects from conception to decommissioning.

We’re excited to welcome 4D Nav to the MTS community!

About Rockland Scientific
Rockland Scientific is a thriving ocean technology company that helps scientists understand climate change, delivering sensor and software solutions to Oceanographers in 30 countries.

Rockland leads the research consortium – InSTREAM, which compromises of six commercial and academic entities in the UK and Canada. InSTREAM addresses shortcomings of existing measurement technology to resolve high-wave number turbulent velocity scales reliably and consistently, in laboratory and tidal channel settings. The results from this applied research project address technical challenges that reduce uncertainties in site design, yield assessments, and device design, leading to improved cost structure and access to financing by reducing economic risk.

Welcome to MTS, Rockland!

About SUNFISH Inc.
SUNFISH is a user friendly and person-portable Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) with field proven Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM). Built for extraterrestrial ocean exploration, Sunfish was developed by Stone Aerospace in collaboration with NASA for future exploratory mission to the Jovian moon, Europa. The AUV was designed to explore an ocean hidden beneath more than 15 km of ice and autonomously gather data from the alien planet.

In October 2017, SUNFISH ran a series of tests and demonstrations in the unstructured labyrinthine cave environment of Peacock Springs. SUNFISH was able to autonomously explore this environment, creating a real-time map which is used to navigate through the cave. SUNFISH penetrated 120 m into the Peacock 1 cave site, reaching a second cave entrance called “Pothole Sink.” The robot was then able to autonomously find its way back to the starting point using the map it had just created.

We're happy to have SUNFISH Inc. a part of the MTS community!
