Inaugural EMERGE Program Hits the Ground Running

OCEANS 2022 Hampton Roads saw the inaugural offering of the MTS EMERGE Program, which supports both undergraduate and graduate students as well as early-career ocean professionals (ECOPs). At the event, participants were paired with an experienced mentor to guide them throughout the conference and help expand their professional networks.

Program highlights included virtual and on-site orientations, special receptions and networking opportunities, introductions on the exhibit hall floor, time at the MTS booth, and an ECOP breakfast with access to experienced members of the ocean community and leadership from IEEE and MTS.

Here’s what participants had to say about the experience:

EMERGE program participants My EMERGE experience was a beautiful one. Undoubtedly, the organizers thought well about its planning and the programs included because I can categorically say that my expectations for the program were met and surpassed. It gave me an opportunity to connect, network, exchange ideas, and learn from global maritime professionals. Another exciting part of the program is that it gives students and early career professionals in the marine technology space a sense of belonging and responsibility enabling them to see themselves as truly emerging leaders in marine technology. I look forward to being a continued valuable member of MTS and also to the exciting careers of the participants in this inaugural cohort.”

“Being part of the EMERGE program provided me with a guided conference experience that allowed me to make the most of my time at OCEANS. The support and encouragement from my EMERGE mentor, peers, and organizers made navigating each part of the conference more manageable and enjoyable. I look forward to reuniting with my EMERGE cohort at the next OCEANS meeting!”

Applications for the next EMERGE Program cohort, which will convene at OCEANS 2023 Gulf Coast, will be available in January. Please contact Monica Ostrander ([email protected]) with any questions about the program and how to get involved.
