ECOPS Present Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Webinar

 

On March 23, three early career ocean professionals discussed how ECOPs can held diversify the marine technology workforce during the Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion webinar. Ashley Ashley Peiffer, who works in diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility across the Integrated Ocean Observing System’s (IOOS); Isabella B. Arzeno who is a postdoctoral scholar in the Coastal Dynamics Lab at the University of California, Irvine; and Itzel Rodriguez, who is a graduate from Texas A&M University and graduate student working on side scan sonars and bathymetric maps with the search and rescue robot EMILY, spoke with webinars attendees about the ways they can actively promote equity and inclusion within their workplace. OCEANS 2022 Chennai Inspired, Innovated, and Sustained Attendees

Inspire. Innovate. Sustain. With 84 sessions (51 Virtual and 33 on-site/hybrid), OCEANS 2022 Chennai held from February 21-24 at IIT Madras Research Park, Chennai, India was a grand success. Key sessions included: GOOS/MTS Industry Dialogues Series, a forum for dialogue with industry which discussed how can industry work with science and government to advance Ocean Observing for 2030 (session recording here); Student Hackathon; ECOPs and Young Professionals program; Climate Change Solutions and the Ocean Decade; and plenary and technical sessions. 

The inaugural MTS Nanda Student Innovation Award 2022, named in honor of MTS India leader Nanda Kumar who passed away last year, was presented to student Aryan Anand for his presentation AUV Aquabot an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Inspired by Aquatic Animals.

Hybrid conference attendees networked online and visited virtual booths as well as the in-person exhibit hall. OCEANS 2022 Chennai session recordings are here.

The MTS Journal is seeking papers for its November/December 2022 issue, Advancements in Buoy Technology to Support Ocean Observations, Maritime Safety, and Environmental Characterization. MTS Honors Dr. Ann Jochens

MTS Honors Dr. Ann Jochens

Research scientist, lawyer, and professor Dr. Ann Jochens passed away on December 1, 2021. Ann was a life member of MTS and served on the editorial board of the MTS Journal.

Ann worked as an environmental lawyer for Gulf, and earned her master's and doctoral degrees in oceanography at Texas A&M University. Ann was the first Executive Director of the Gulf of Mexico Coastal Ocean Observing System Regional Association (GCOOS-RA). Ann will be remembered for her dedication to the mission of MTS and for her immense love of our oceans and their inhabitants
