Early Career Ocean Professionals Section Open

MTS now offers a new Early Career Ocean Professionals (ECOP) membership category. ECOP members are defined as “an individual who is within 10 years of their last professional degree and self-identified as an ECOP.” This membership ($50) will come with all the rights and privileges of Society membership.
To foster outreach and engagement with our new ECOP section, each month in Currents, we will introduce you to some of our newest ECOP members. This month to kick things off we meet, Tony White, Lead Robotics Engineer at Forever Oceans; and Sidney McLaurin, Partner at Material Impact Fund.
Tony joined MTS in January, and he is looking forward to “staying informed on cutting edge [research] and to networking with others in the industry.” He earned a mechanical engineering degree from Georgia Tech and has nine years of working in marine robotics - from autonomous survey boats to swarms; and from mussel farming to now mariculture. Tony said he would like to attend MTS conferences and events on oil and gas, aquaculture and power generation.
Sidney just joined MTS this month, and he works as a venture capital investor. “The largest value to MTS is the community,” he said. “I am looking forward to meeting entrepreneurs, scientists, and professionals in the field.” Sidney has a engineering background and an Environmental Management degree with a focus in Coastal Management from Duke University. “I am most interested in bluetech/marine technology, specifically marine robotics,” he said.
We welcome Tony and Sidney to MTS, and we hope to see them soon at an upcoming event. For more information on ECOPs, contact Joshua Baghdadyto join or visit HERE.

Thank you for the positive post webinar emails both MTS and the Ocean Exchange received. Here is one we would like to share from Barb Ryan, World Geospatial Industry Council. "First and foremost, Congratulations to Ocean Exchange on its 10-year Anniversary and on its perseverance. Secondly, appreciation is extended to the Marine Technology Society (MTS) for the partnership with Ocean Exchange. Coordination between and among organizations working in the Ocean domain (as well as the Atmospheric and Terrestrial domains) is absolutely essential if we have any hope of addressing the major environmental issues facing us today. Issues like climate change, disaster resilience, energy transition, public health, etc., all encompassed under a banner of sustainable development can only be addressed with better public-private partnerships and the will/intent to work together. Thank you for including WGIC in this important debate."
Don’t miss the next in the series – April 7, 2021 –Mobile Power Generation – Yi Chao, Seatrec; Carrie Schmaus, Water Power Technologies Office; and Robert Cavagaro, Pacific Northwestern National Lab. Register here
As we remain hopeful that 2021 will allow us to get back to some semblance of normalcy, our thoughts are with all our society members who have suffered losses both personally and professionally during the pandemic. Our conference teams both OTC, and OCEANS2021 continue to work towards having both in person and virtual events. For the latest news continue to check the MTS website for the latest information. My heartfelt thanks to the local organizing committees and professional conference organizers who are putting in the extra hours of planning and re-planning due to the pandemic.

United Nations Decade of Ocean Science Launches in the United States

February 22, 2021

January 2021 marks the beginning of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021 – 2030). The goal of the Decade is to unite ocean stakeholders worldwide behind a common framework to ensure sustainable use of ocean resources and reverse the cycle of decline in long-term ocean health. In a two-day virtual event, on February 3 and 4, the US National Committee for the Ocean Decade, chaired by MTS member Larry Mayer and vice chaired by MTS Past-President Rick Spinrad, kicked off the US activities by fostering engagement, dialog, and ideation around transformative research efforts. Over 800 individuals attended and more than eighty transformative concepts called “Ocean-Shots” were presented to address the challenges of the Decade.

Black in Marine Science Week

2020 highlighted a year of civil unrest with racial injustices at its forefront. Well known to many, the summer of 2020 featured the unfortunate incident of a Black birder being threatened simply for trying to bird in central park. Sparking an eerie shared experience, a group of Black birders founded #BlackBirdersWeek. Aiming to dispel the myth that Black birders don’t exist, the week took social media by storm and other STEM disciplines started their own virtual movements. A tweet that has now received over 300 likes, by Dr. Tiara Moore started the foundation for #BlackInMarineScienceWeek, with organizers quickly responding and developing a committee. The week ran November 29-Dec 5, 2020 and made a huge impact globally. With over 1 million social media engagements, hundreds of participants, 50 panelists, 35 sponsors (including the Marine Technology Society), and 14 organizers, the inaugural #BlackInMarineScienceWeek turned out better than what was ever expected!

Operational Effectiveness of Unmanned Underwater Systems – Publication Available

The book on CD-ROM, Operational Effectiveness of Unmanned Underwater Systems (OEUUS), was published in 1998 by the MTS ROV Committee and has been on sale by MTS for the last 20 years. Recently, the ROV Committee chair, Chuck Richards, decided to make it available for free on line due to the historical perspective it presents on the technology. The OEUSS was produced to provide guidance and information to those who use, plan to use, or are just interested in unmanned underwater systems and their associated technology. The publication’s 600 pages provide a discussion of the systems and what can be expected of them. In essence, it explains what they are, what they can and cannot do, where they are operating and how successful they are, what you should be aware of and what can be expected in the future. It provides an understanding of the “operational effectiveness of unmanned underwater systems.”
