Stephen (Steve) Hall is a UK-based marine policy, science, and technology specialist. He is the former CEO of the Society for Underwater Technology (SUT), was elected Vice Chair of UNESCO's Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (2015-2017), and served as Head of UK delegation to IOC until he left public service in 2017.  Steve has over 37 years of experience in the global marine science, technology, defense, data, energy, policy and education sector.

Steve works on a consultancy basis, helping organizations engage in ocean science, technology, policy, planning, sustainability, foresight, energy transition, marine autonomous systems, communications, training, growing the new Blue Economy and playing a full part in the UN Decade of Ocean Science for sustainable development.

Current projects are focused on international collaborative programs, in particular consultancy services to the Nippon Foundation / GEBCO Seabed 2030 project, UNESCO's Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission and two private sector technology companies. He also supports the not-for-profit Rising Seas Institute to raise awareness of the long-term challenges of multi-meter sea level rise, the "Real Ice" start-up which is exploring ways to re-ice melting areas in the Arctic, and continues to carry out tasks for Marine Learned Societies and Professional Bodies.

Indicate one or two key goals that you would hope to accomplish in this position over the next 3 years:
A key goal that I would hope to accomplish would be to raise the profile of the MTS Journal as a resource that MTS and SUT members are able to use as a high quality peer-reviewed journal. I would also encourage development of new media such as podcasts and short form video and work to increase the visibility of MTS's social media world-wide.

Discuss the qualities and experience you posses that make you a strong candidate for the position for which you are running:
The qualities and experiences I posses include broad based knowledge of ocean science, technology, and the policy community, including in geographical areas outside the core regions where MTS is already well established.

I have previous experience as CEO of sister Learned Society (Society for Underwater Technology) including managerial oversight of their own publications committee and the introduction of the very well-received Underwater Technology podcast, which achieved over 20,000 downloads over the first 42 episodes that I recorded, edited, and produced.

I also have a strong understanding of why a Learned Society MUST have a high quality, peer-reviewed journal to be taken seriously as a Society with the authority to deliver policy advice to governments, industry and international bodies.

Lastly, I am good at multitasking and keen to grow the Marine Technology Society.
