Webinar: The NCS - A New Frontier for Deep Sea Minerals Exploration - View From an Operator

To achieve the International Energy Agency (IEA) net zero goals, we need 6X more minerals and metals than we currently use. Terrestrial ore grades are declining, and the consequences include more energy-intensive extraction, increased waste handling, and greater land use. There is no reason to not investigate the deep sea as an opportunity to fulfill some of the demand in the mineral-intensive energy transition we are moving into.

In June 2023, the Norwegian government proposed the opening of approximately 280,000 km² offshore Norway for mineral resource activities. This suggestion has to go through formal approval in parliament before the area can legally be available for industrial activity. Green Minerals was founded in 2020 with a vision to create a marine minerals value chain through partners and affiliations, where Green Minerals explores and operates the licenses.

We believe that there will be an opening of areas in the coming years, and we are preparing for a license application during this period. As an important part of this preparation, we are conducting studies within several aspects of the value chain.

Espen is a geologist from University of Bergen in Norway with 10 years of experience in oil and gas exploration. His experience spans both the governmental and industrial sectors, with specializations in exploration, license management, and resource management.

Moderator:

Dr. Alex Barnard, Chair MTS Marine Mineral Resources Committee

Alex Barnard is a scientist, father, and educator. He has a PhD in Marine Geoscience from the University of Houston and works in both industry and academia. He is the founder of an online education company, and serves as a review board member for two academic journals.
