Message from the CEO: December 2023

Anchoring Gratitude: Reflecting on 2023 and Charting Our Course for 2024

As we approach the end of 2023, the MTS team is looking forward to spending time with loved ones and reenergizing by doing the things that mean the most to us, with the people who mean the most to us. We wish the same for all of you, even in the midst of a season full of hustle and bustle.

As 2023 comes to a close, it is with great pleasure and gratitude that we reflect on the remarkable and impactful moments that have defined the year for MTS. Here are a few highlights worth celebrating:

  • The Ocean Enterprise Initiative launched, marking a new chapter in stakeholder engagement and partnerships to support and bolster the global blue economy. Thanks to initial funding from NOAA on ongoing support from GOOS, UNESCO, and industry partners, the Ocean Enterprise Initiative will build upon successes from the signature Dialogues with Industry program.
  • We welcomed the MATE ROV Competition as a fully integrated program within the Society. 2023 saw integration between the distinct and vibrant communities represented by MATE and by MTS - and a convergence between regional MATE networks and geographic MTS structures. We look forward to continuing to facilitate these structures of support and collaboration in the new year. Together, our work is elevated and amplified.
  • In-person events created meaningful convenings with lasting impact. OCEAN Limerick and OCEANS Gulf Coast highlighted the full spectrum of marine technologies in the global market. From Oceanology International Americas in San Diego to Ocean Business in Southampton to the Offshore Technology Conference in Houston, MTS members served as thought leaders and industry experts. Just this month, Underwater Intervention returned - newly partnered with Workboat - and reached record attendance numbers in New Orleans.

While we celebrate our accomplishments, we know there is more work to be done: more connections to be made, more innovation to support, more impact to measure. The MTS Board of Directors is working to solidify bold and intentional strategies for the next year and beyond. MTS Sections and Committees are gearing up for a 2024 full of opportunities for knowledge sharing and connection.

Earlier this fall, the MTS HQ staff team worked together to write a set of "guiding principles" to steer our day-to-day operations. The very first item on that list: "Our team supports the strategy, priorities, and activities of our member-led, member-serving organization." This foundational element has guided - and will continue to guide - our decisions and actions as an organization. You have heard me say it, and I'll continue to say it - MTS exists to deliver value to our members.

A heartfelt thanks to each of you for the privilege of working alongside you on this important work. Best wishes for a holiday that delights and recharges. Looking ahead to 2024!

Warmly,

Chris Ostrander
