Marine Technology Society Dynamic Positioning Committee Announces New Treasurer, Mat Bateman and Thanks Outgoing Treasurer, Dietmar Deter
Houston, TX – February 12, 2025 – The Marine Technology Society (MTS) Dynamic Positioning (DP) Committee is pleased to announce the appointment of Mat Bateman as the new Treasurer. Mat brings a wealth of experience to the role, underpinned by his extensive background in marine technology and mission-critical systems.
Mat, the Senior Partner and Marine Consultant at Keelson Marine Assurance LLC, has more than 35 years of experience in the marine industry. He is a certified Marine Engineer Officer and holds a degree in Electrical and Electronic Systems. Mat's expertise spans dynamic positioning, risk analysis, and marine assurance, with a consulting career that includes key roles at Global Maritime before founding Keelson Marine Assurance LLC, 8 years ago. His contributions to the marine industry, including authoring technical papers and providing expert opinions in legal proceedings, have earned him recognition as a leading authority in the field.

The MTS DP Committee would also like to extend a heartfelt thank you to outgoing Treasurer and one of the founding members of the MTS DP Committee, Dietmar Deter for his many years of dedication and exceptional service Dietmar’s contributions to marine technology are legendary, including his groundbreaking work on the design and optimization of dynamic positioning systems for the world’s first DP drilling vessel and the inaugural DP semisubmersible drilling vessel.
Dietmar’s career spans over four decades, with significant achievements that include earning the Distinguished Achievement Award from the DP Committee, being named a Fellow of the Marine Technology Society, and receiving SNAME’s prestigious Blakely Smith Medal for Outstanding Accomplishments in Ocean Engineering. His unparalleled expertise has shaped the field of marine propulsion systems and DP technology.
In his acceptance speech for the Lifetime Achievement Award, Dietmar was described as "a force of innovation, a paragon of excellence, and a beacon of inspiration." The MTS DP Committee expresses its deepest gratitude to Dietmar for his tireless work and remarkable contributions, which have had a profound and lasting impact on the industry.
