Legislative Update - HOUSE PASSES THE COMPETES ACT

HOUSE PASSES THE COMPETES ACT

On February 4, the House of Representatives passed the COMPETES Act, which increases funding for marine science, expands renewable energy and strengthens protection of marine life.

The bill improves regulations and the tracking of illegal fishing and fish products produced with slave labor. The legislation also boosts ocean science and conservation and provides resources for the education of ocean scientists. And its provisions help protect ecosystems, including deep-sea environments and the Artic region.

The legislation also makes critical investments in renewable energy and aims to put the U.S. globally ahead in clean energy development.
