Joshua Baghdady – Chairperson

Organization:

Applied Research Laboratory at the University of Hawai'i

Biography:
Joshua Baghdady works as the unmanned systems communications engineer and project manager at the Applied Research Laboratory at the University of Hawai‘i (ARL at UH). With a background in electrical engineering, Joshua completed his Master’s degree from Clemson University in the investigation of optical modalities for underwater wireless communications. His poster presentation on this work at OCEANS 2016 Monterey was awarded first place in that year's SPC, and Joshua returned to OCEANS in Aberdeen and Anchorage to serve as an SPC judge in those competitions, later detailing his experience in the December 2017 edition of the IEEE OES BEACON newsletter. In 2019, Joshua led a team from the ARL at UH to Tróia, Portugal to participate in the NATO Maritime Unmanned Systems Recognized Environmental Picture experimentation. He is keenly interested in enabling interoperability among disparate maritime unmanned systems with the goal of strengthening international collaborative efforts to sense, monitor, and protect the Global Ocean. Later in 2019, Joshua received the MTS Young Professional award in recognition of his prior volunteer efforts with the Society. In early 2020 Joshua joined the IOC-designated UN Decade Informal Working Group of Early Career Ocean Professionals (ECOPs) and was tasked, along with Alfredo Giron and Assia Edderouzi, with determining a broad strategy for fostering ECOP engagement with MTS in an attractive, meaningful, and sustained way. As ECOP Section Chairperson, Joshua hopes to continue these efforts in a formal capacity and build on the momentum gained thus far.

Camille Pagniello – Vice Chairperson

Organization:
Scripps Institution of Oceanography

Biography:
Camille Pagniello is a Ph.D. candidate in Applied Ocean Sciences at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and soon to be postdoctoral fellow at Stanford University. Her research interests lie at the intersection of technology, data science, acoustics, animals, oceanography, conservation and sustainable management of natural resources. She is currently using passive acoustics and optical imaging to identify the sounds of commercially and recreationally important fish species and to locate their spawning areas within marine protected areas. Camille completed her BSc Honours, Co-op in Marine Biology and Physics with minors in Mathematics and Ocean Sciences at Dalhousie University. During her studies, Camille was an NSERC USRA scholar at Dalhousie and Memorial University of Newfoundland (MUN), as well as Summer Student Fellow at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution conducting research in the fields of computational geometry, atmospheric physics, biological oceanography, avian acoustics and biology, and ocean acoustics. She also completed a semester abroad as part of the SEA Semester Program (S-250) in which she sailed from San Diego, CA to Papeete, Tahiti and conducted marine chemistry research. Camille has been an active student member of the Marine Technology Society since 2010, The Oceanography Society since 2015, and the Acoustical Society of America since 2017 serving in multiple student leadership positions.
