2023 School Project Expo - MTS India Section

The SRM Institute of Science and Technology, in collaboration with the MTS India Section, ASCE India Section Southern Region, MTS SRM Student Section, and ASCE SRM Student Chapter, successfully hosted the School Project Expo 2023. This event served as a platform for young minds in grades 6-12 from various parts of Tamil Nadu to showcase their innovative projects. Taking place on August 4, 2023, at Faraday Hall, the expo aimed to celebrate students' skills, knowledge, and accomplishments across diverse fields.

Tell us about your organization and how you connected with MTS.
AlphaGeo is a re-selling organization for businesses in the surveying industry, encompassing both land and hydrographic sectors. Our offerings include drones/UAVs, underwater drones/ROVs, various payloads, and survey equipment along with software solutions. We proudly serve as the official UK supplier for international companies such as Lily and Greenpeace in Germany. Our affiliation with MTS enables us to stay informed about the latest advancements in marine technology, connect with fellow industry leaders, and foster our reputation within the field. Our participation in the MTS pavilion at Ocean Business 2023 was a rewarding experience, and we eagerly anticipate more networking opportunities as active members of MTS.

What part of your MTS membership has your organization found the most valuable?
We had a great time participating in Ocean Business 23 and have already registered for the 2025 show! At the event, we were joined by two key suppliers, Tersus and Hydro-Tech, who showcased their cutting-edge products in the marine technology sector. Ocean Business provided us with the opportunity to engage with fantastic companies, like-minded individuals, and highlight our expertise and knowledge in the industry. We're eagerly looking forward to the amazing experience once again in 2025!

2023 Captain Don Walsh Award for Ocean Exploration 2023 Winner Announced

Dr. Peter Girguis

Dr Peter Girguis, Professor of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology at Harvard University and Adjunct Oceanographer at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, described by his peers as ‘the epitome of a deep-sea explorer’ and ‘a man for all ocean seasons”, has been announced the winner of the 2023 Captain Don Walsh Award for Ocean Exploration by the Marine Technology Society (MTS) and the Society for Underwater Technology (SUT).

MTS CEO among ocean experts appointed to federal Ocean Research Advisory Panel

On August 1, 2023, 18 ocean experts began their appointment as members of the Ocean Research Advisory Panel (ORAP). The 18 ORAP members include representatives from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, ocean industries, state, tribal, territorial or local governments, and academia. Among the 18 individuals chosen is Chris Ostrander, Marine Technology Society (MTS) Chief Executive Officer.

Currently, there are local chapters operating in Maryland - Baltimore County and Baltimore City; Trenton, New Jersey, and Atlanta, Georgia.

We are deeply saddened at the loss of the crew of the submersible Titan.  Our underwater community is close-knit and deeply connected; many of us worked with and knew those onboard.  We appreciate and extend our gratitude for the efforts of the hundreds of volunteers and professionals who worked tirelessly on the complex and difficult search. That numerous agencies and commercial partners, from multiple nations, rapidly responded and deployed cutting-edge technologies is a testament to the strength and cohesion of the maritime sector – and emblematic of the Mariner’s Code that connects all seafarers.  Along with the entire marine technology community, MTS leadership offers our sincere condolences and sympathies to the families and friends of the Titan's crew.

Marine Technology Society Celebrates 60 Years

Formed in June 1963, the Marine Technology Society (MTS) stands stronger than ever six decades later.

In the early 1960’s, a group of business, academic, and government leaders recognized the need for a professional society to bring together scientists, engineers, and others interested in the rapidly growing fields of ocean technology and marine affairs. They convened a committee to establish the character, name, objectives, and basic policies of MTS – launched as a not-for-profit corporation in June of 1963.

Cooperation between KAUST and the Marine Technology Society to establish the first section in the Middle East

King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) and the Marine Technology Society (MTS) have announced the launch of the Red Sea Section, the society's first section in the middle east. The section was established on January 9, 2023 at KAUST with the goal of facilitating communication between those interested in marine science and technology from inside and outside the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Oceanography Pioneer and Philanthropist – James L. Cairns – to be inducted into Florida Inventors Hall of Fame

Dr. James L. Cairns, Founder and Executive Director of the Cairns Foundation, and CEO of Abyssal Systems, Inc, is among the world-class inventors who have been selected as a 2023 Inductee to the Florida Inventors Hall of Fame. Cairns is the pioneer of underwater electrical/electronic fiber-optic connector technologies that allowed circuits to be successfully and seamlessly mated and de-mated reliably within the harsh environment of the deep ocean. His innovations revolutionized anti-submarine warfare and subsea surveillance, expanded the industry of ocean energy production, and significantly advanced the fields of Oceanography, Marine Geology and Seismology. He holds 62 U.S. patents and received the Marine Technology Society’s Compass-Rolex Distinguished Lifetime Achievement Award and Lockheed Martin Award for Excellence in Marine Science and Engineering. In 2017, he was inducted into the Offshore Energy Center Hall of Fame for Pioneering Technology.
